Duane Michals

Duane Michals is an American photograher, born in 1932, he was first employed as a Graphic Designer but entered the field of Photography after he discovered a natural talent whilst visiting he USSR in 1958. He uses verse and narratives to accompany his images, images which hold atmospheric depths encouraging the viewer to form their own conclusions.
His work reflected a style which I was interested in creating for my images for the Photographic Narrative brief, which involved taking images to reflect a narrative.

" The things that interested me were all invisible, metaphysical questions: life after death, the aura of sex - it's atmosphere rather than the mechanics - these are the things you never see on the street. So I had to invent and make these situations to express and explore these things."

-Duane Michals (The essential Duane Michals)
