Photographic Narrative - Final Images

Using Photoshop I cropped various images and changed them to black and white, altering the levels to darken the black and lighten the white so the images changed but did not become unrecognisable, using this process I decided on 10 images which I wanted to work on further.
On the chosen 10 I used layers to create masks then created a gradient overlay and a colour overlay in a dark geeen to create the final images. They were printed onto a parchment style translucent paper to add to the atmosphere of the images.

These are the final images:

Photographic Narrative

The brief Photographic Narrative involved exploring photography to create 8 images in relation to a Narrative from the book 'Einsteins Dreams'. Written by Alan Lightman in 1992, the book contains 30 short stories, all relating to time and theory of time, set in 1905 they are based on the dreamsof Albert Einstein as he proceeds towards the theory of relativity.

The chapter I was to explore was set on April 16th 1905, it involved various theories of time and how if you were to travel back in time you wouldn't be able to change anything as this would dramatically alter the future as we know it, the atmosphere of the chapter is intense and lonely as the time traveller is living in a different world unble to intergrate with anything or anyone. The chapter also spoke about how everyday actions which you make decisions about can change the future not only for yourself but for other people.

I began taking photographs, trying to use light and settings which created lonely or intrigueing atmospheres, Originally I wanted to create an image which contained an object which shouldn't really be there, like an imposter in the image, to coincide with the story of the time traveller not really suposed to be there. As I continued taking photographs I decided to take close up photographs so I could alter them to create obscure images which show a sense of depth as if to show another place.

I took over 200 images, here are a few examples:

I decided to take further photographs at night and in close ups of urban features.

End Sting

Brief: To design a 3-5 second End Sting with the company's logo you have been given.

Logo: ENO (English National Opera)

I began by researching the logo to find out the designer and typeface, it was designed by CDT design in the early '90's, CDT design is based in London and was formed in 1979 by Mike Dempsy with Ken Carroll and Nick Thirkell, their clients include Royal Mail, City and Guilds and Action Aid.

I researched the actual structure of the Logo and The English National Opera to understand their style and image.

I decided to create some ideas based on the Colliseum building, mainly the sphere, using typography to create faces as if they were singing and images of dancers, simplified to create the letters ENO. The ideas had to be relatively simple to enable them to work in moving image and the End Sting had to be only 3-5 seconds long.

I worked some ideas into storyboard format to see how the ideas would work limited to frames, The typography idea proved to be quite difficult as it would have to redrawn numerous times to get the letters to portray facial expressions and the letters were limited to E, N and O.

I liked the idea of the revolving sphere representing the Colliseum building as I thought this could work quite well in moving image and through research I discovered that the sphere on the building actually lights up and revolves.

I put this idea into a story board, then designed each frame in Adobe Illustrator, turning them into symbols I imported them into Flash to create the animation, I decided to add background music and chose Mozart's Marriage of Figaro as the tune builds to a climax and then slows which I thought suited the animation. I was pleased with the final End Sting and enjoyed working with Flash, it was good experience to gain knowledge of an additional programme and to work with moving image.

Photography Exhibition

Brief: To design marketing material to promote a photography exhibition at the cube gallery, Manchester.

Working in a group of 3, we put together some ideas for a name for the exhibition, we decided on 3 routes, Crop, Direction and Perception. Working together using the images provided by the degree students who were holding the exhibition we worked on visual ideas for posters and invitations.

The ideas were presented to the client (degree students) and we then recieved feedback and they chose which idea they would like to work with.

The feedback was positive about the ideas but they discussed how we appeared fragmented as a group, as although we had worked together on the original ideas we had worked on the final poster individualy, the feedback made me realise how I could work better as part of a group and made me realise how it wasn't just about the ideas it is also about the individual or group and whether the client feels they could work with them.

The Presentation:
